Message from Fred Austin, dated 26 Apr 2025:
I received a call from Steve Bruttig's wife yesterday wife yesterday. Steve passed away on April 22, 2025. It was not unexpected. Steve has been fighting cancer and Parkinson's for a while now. A few weeks ago he moved into a hospice facility in Lincoln, Nebraska near his home. I spoke with him a week ago and he was still mentally sharp as a tack. His body was giving out. He passed peacefully in his sleep.

I am so very sorry to hear this. I loved Steve Bruttig. What a kind human being he was. Such wonderful memories in school, but more importantly, keeping up through our reunions and birthday messages. My deepest condolences to his wife and family. Sending love to you all, Barbara Black

Steve lived right across the street from me when we were at Taft. I was drawn to him immediately for a reason that I only figured out later in life. He was certainly kind and really friendly, but it was the fact that he was already an adult at his early age that drew me in. I have many great memories with him, several of which we relived when I talked to him a few weekls ago. I will miss him, but I won't forget him.
