Steve and I were in the same grade at Sutter Jr. High school in Winnetka.  By the time we graduated from Taft we had become best friends.  Steve had an affection for fast cars and was an excellent mechanic.  He liked folk music and rock 'n' roll.  While achieving academic excellence was not a high priority he was smart and took several college classes that interested him. He was known to consume large quantities of beer on occasion - especially before he turned 21 when it was more exciting. He loved to backpack in the high country of the Eastern Sierras and went on a week-long backpacking trip by himself just before reporting for duty.

Steve had strong reservations about fighting in a protracted war where military victory was not the objective.  When duty called there was no hesitation.   For the most part army life seemed to suit him and he strived to be the best.  Steve was proud to be part of the historical 101 Airborne "Screaming Eagles".  He fell just short of being accepted for Green Beret training and was told to re-apply after a year.  Soon after landing in Vietnam he was in several fire fights - engaging in mortal combat was not an aspect of his military service he sought to avoid.

As I age, I think of him often.  I am glad Steve was my friend but am saddened that he never had the opportunity to experience a full life.
